The home was built in the late 1800's and had barely any insulation at all in the attic. The entire home was cold during the winter. The solution for this home was to clean his attic down to the drywall, vacuum and scoop out all the bat guano, treat all the substrate with a disinfectant to kill the bacteria. We then air sealed all the top plates, wire penetrations and pipe penetrations. We even fixed major holes that surrounded the masonry chimney. This was crucial in order to stop hot air from escaping the living areas.
